The shadow business secretary has urged Philip Hammond to raise investment per head in northern regions to match London and the south-east

Rebecca Long-Bailey, Labour’s shadow business secretary, is calling on the chancellor to use this week’s budget to start “levelling up” public investment in the north to match spending per head in London, warning that “horrific” deprivation is stoking public anger.

“We would want to see a levelling up of investment per head across regions, in line with London. That would be one of our key tests for his budget this week,” she said.
