As the primaries continue, hundreds of women eye seats in Washington – but activists say there’s ‘more work to do’

Every once in a while, a voter will approach Amy McGrath, a first-time candidate for Congress in Kentucky and a retired Marine fighter pilot, and tell her they won’t support her because she is the mother of young children who need her at home.

“I always point out that the incumbent who serves in the seat has young children the same ages as mine,” McGrath said. “But I can’t imagine they would say that if I was a man.”
