A network of eight radio telescopes around the world helped to record the image

The first image of a black hole has been captured by astronomers, heralding a revolution in our understanding of the universe’s most enigmatic objects.

The image, which shows a glowing halo of gas and dust surrounding a dark interior, provides the first direct visual evidence for black holes, which were first predicted by Einstein’s theory of General Relativity more than a century ago.
