Government adviser on immigration tells MPs that ending current system would yield only modest benefits

The economic boost of a Brexit deal involving preferential access to the UK for EU citizens could outweigh the benefits of ending free movement, according to the goverment’s migration adviser.

The prime minister, Theresa May, has confirmed that people from EU countries will be treated the same as those across the rest of the world when the new immigration system is introduced after Brexit.
