At least one person has been killed and two others seriously injured in fast-spreading wildfires in northern California wine country, officials say.

The death and injuries occurred in Mendocino County, one of several counties struggling to contain a total of 14 major fires burning out of control. The wildfires, whipped by powerful winds early on Monday, sent residents on a headlong flight to safety through smoke and flames as homes burned.
