US president suggests doubling 2% spending target that only five countries have met

Donald Trump has told other Nato countries to spend as much as 4% of their GDP on defence after launching an extraordinary tirade against Germany on the first day of the Nato summit.

The US president had suggested doubling the existing 2% target, the Bulgarian president told reporters, even though just five countries, including the US and the UK, have already met it.
