Authorities in 11 countries warn residents and tourists to take precautions amid region’s most intense heatwave since 2003

Eleven southern and central European countries have issued extreme heat warnings amid the region’s most sustained heatwave since 2003, with residents and tourists told to take precautions and scientists warning things are likely to get worse.

Authorities in countries including Italy, Switzerland, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Croatia and Serbia are on red alert, according to the European forecasters’ network Meteoalarm, with parts of southern Spain and France on amber.
