Your editorial (Killer robots can’t be confined to science fiction, 30 August) states “no nuclear power has ever given up their capacity to launch a nuclear attack”. In the late 1980s, the South African government dismantled all of its nuclear weapons, the first nation in the world to voluntarily give up its nuclear deterrent.

• Have we forgotten the 13 unarmed British citizens shot by paratroopers in Derry (Letters, 1 September)? I reckon 30 January 1972 was the last time protesters were massacred on British soil (however dubious Britain’s claim to that piece of it).
