Lawyers hope to have sum paid to current and former detainees before offshore detention centre closes next month

A judge has approved the $70m compensation payout for current and former Manus Island detainees.

Victorian supreme court justice Cameron Macaulay said on Wednesday he had approved the settlement reached with the Australian government and operators of the Manus Island regional processing centre.
