German chancellor faces rebellion, amid reports her interior minister deemed her migration deal ‘ineffective’

German chancellor Angela Merkel struggled to calm tensions with hardline conservatives inside her coalition government on Sunday night, as her interior minister reportedly dismissed her migration deal as an “ineffective surrogate”.

After the European Union last week hammered out a vague accord on migration, promising to set up secure centres to process the asylum claims of people rescued in the Mediterranean, Merkel drew up her own raft of measures to tighten controls on the influx of migrants to Germany and presented it to her sceptical coalition partners, the conservative Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU).
