This summer was the joint hottest on record in the UK, according to Met Office figures that will heighten concern about the impact of global warming.

The summer of 2018 will be remembered for a six-week spell from the end of June to the second week of August where daytime temperatures in parts of the country consistently topped 30C (86F).
