Former senior police officers are among those charged with criminal offences over the 1989 disaster

Duckenfield was promoted by the South Yorkshire chief constable Peter Wright to replace Chief Supt Brian Mole as commander of F Division and Hillsborough 19 days before the semi-final. He was previously a city centre superintendent, with duties including policing Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane ground, but had never commanded a match at Hillsborough before. Duckenfield retired, aged 55, in 1992.
